Portugal 2 – 0 Switzerland: Andre Silva sends Portugal to Russia 2018
Andre Silva was on the score sheet as Portugal defeated Switzerland 2-0 to secure a place in Russia 2018 on goal difference.
Switzerland saw their hundred percent record (100%) come crashing at the feet of the Portuguese.
Switzerland needed just a draw to secure automatic qualification, but were undone by Johan Djourou’s own goal and Andre Silva’s tap in.
In the first half, Portugal had more possession of the ball, but could only create few clearcut chances.
Firstly, Andre Silva tested Yann Sommer with a deflected effort in the 6th minute.
Then Ronaldo embarked on a run at the edge of the box, before he was tripped. The referee had no intention of blowing the whistle, but the ball found it’s way to Bernardo Silva who sent a stinging left-footed effort which Sommer parried.
In between these events, Switzerland had claims of a penalty rebuffed by the referee. Eliseu had brought down Haris Seferovic in the box but the referee waved play on.
Just before half time, Eliseu sent an inviting cross towards Joao Mario and a scramble between Sommer and Mario resulted in the ball hitting an onrushing Djourou before going into the net.
The first half ended 1-0 in favour of Portugal.
In the second half, Cristiano Ronaldo sent an effort high before Xherdan Shaqiri attempted to outwit Rui Patricio with a quick free kick.
Andre Silva Scores to Seal Qualification
The second goal came in the 57th minute after some nice team play. The Portuguese exchanged some passes among themselves before Bernardo Silva released Andre Silva to tap in.
The goal was Andre Silva’s ninth of the qualifiers.
Ronaldo missed a good chance late on
